Marlin
1894
Introduction
In the first of this series we will look
at the rifle proudly displayed by a well known monkey on our logo.
When lay people see an underlever rifle
they tend to think “Winchester”. In fact Marlin Firearms has a comparably long and
interesting heritage. Founded in 1870 by John M Marlin in New Haven, Connecticut,
USA. The firm originally produced derringers and revolvers. In 1891 they produced
a lever action 0.22 repeater which is reputed to be the oldest shoulder arm design
that is still being produced. During World War I Marlin became one of the largest
machine gun producers in the world. Since then the company has concentrated producing
sporting firearms which now range in calibre from the 0.17 rimfire to the patent
belled 450 Marlin cartridge.
