The Winchester 94

Introduction

This month we will look at the direct competitor of the Marlin 1894. The Winchester 94 has an equally long and distinguished history and is perhaps better known than its Marlin counterpart.

 Versions

Available in calibres

  • 0.38 special / 0.357 magnum
  • 0.45 Colt

Barrel lengths range from 18 inches to 24 inches.

Action

Lever action with “side ejection”, tubular magazine. In actual fact, not a true side ejection but a modification of the original vertical ejection system.

Suitable for

Precision underlever rifle competitions such as at the Phoenix Meeting and with Durham and Cleveland Small Bore Rifle Association.

Timed and Precision matches at the Phoenix Meeting and other Cowboy Action shooting.

Wild West re-enactments.

Advantages

Extremely well made and finished.
Extremely accurate when properly maintained.
Good open sights.

Disadvantages

Heavy triggers.

Maintenance can be challenging, however, a monkey’s tail has proved most useful in this endeavour.
